Detachment

O SON OF MAN!

Should prosperity befall thee, rejoice not and should abasement come upon thee, grieve not, for both shall pass away and be no more.
~Bahá'u'lláh
Opened with What Are You Doing ice-breaker, then set a calming atmosphere by listening to Ennio Morricone's Gabriel's Oboe from the film The Mission. After, passed a basket filled with prayer books around the group and inviting friends, should they wish, to share what they are praying for. We then sang If Thou Lovest Me (sample), and concluded the evening with a fantastic discussion on detachment that was inspired by the quotation above (from The Hidden Words, Arabic No. 52).

Some thoughts shared:
  • When it comes to music, we're attached to the beat, despite the meaning in the lyrics. When we become immune to a certain kind of music, then our limit becomes lax
  • People, in general, connect over negative attributes, such as gossiping about someone behind their back. It is difficult to be detached from worrying what others think about us when it's so normal to talk about others.
Some questions asked:
  • How does this relate to our life?
  • Why is it important to work on our attitudes?
  • What do we do when there is strife amongst friends or family?
  • How do we strive for detachment when we're being tested in our life?
